Dear All, Thank-you so much to the attendees of this academic years Odontology Section RAMI meetings. Despite the pandemic lockdown restrictions, we enjoyed a very successful year, which included a packed house and a very warm welcome for our locally and internationally acclaimed speakers at our February meeting. The audience was clearly overwhelmed following the powerful clinical presentations from Dr Gerry Cleary, Dr PJ Byrne, Dr Marielle Blake and Dr Patrick Palacci which highlighted the possibilities and new heights which can be reached when interdiciplinary colleagues combine their efforts to realise clinical excellence.  Some photos from the evening are on twitter.  Looking forward to seeing you all at the next meetings during the 2020-2021 academic year. Letter in Irish Times from Mouth Head & Neck (MHN) Cancer Awareness Ireland Group - representing MHN Cancer Survivors, Irish Cancer Society, Dental Health Foundation, Irish Dental Association, Spunout, Cork Dental Hospital, National Cancer Control Programme and Dublin Dental University Hospital.  Mouth Cancer Awareness Day will be on Wednesday 16 September 2020.  The focus of our information and advice in 2020 will be on older people to increase awareness about prevention and early detection of MHN Cancer:

New microbiological research undertaken by investigators from the Dublin Dental University Hospital and colleagues at St. James’s Hospital Dublin has revealed that staphylococcal bacteria in the mouth, gums and nose (oro-nasal cavity) of patients with type 2 diabetes are a likely source of infection for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).

Microbiologists from the Dublin Dental University Hospital Microbiology Unit at Trinity College in collaboration with colleagues at the National MRSA Reference Laboratory at St. James’s Hospital Dublin have found that Ireland has the highest prevalence of the multiple antibiotic resistance genes optrA and poxtA among linezolid-resistant isolates of the bacterial species Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis. Linezolid is an antibiotic used to treat infections by antibiotic-resistant Gram-positive bacteria. The researchers used whole-genome sequencing to identify optrA and poxtA in hospital isolates of E. faecium and E. faecalis and showed that these genes could be readily transferred to antibiotic susceptible isolates on large transferable genetic elements called plasmids.
