New research suggests a link between oral health and diabetic foot ulcer infections

New microbiological research undertaken by investigators from the Dublin Dental University Hospital and colleagues at St. James’s Hospital Dublin has revealed that staphylococcal bacteria in the mouth, gums and nose (oro-nasal cavity) of patients with type 2 diabetes are a likely source of infection for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).

New study reveals that Ireland has the highest prevalence of the multiple-antibiotic resistance genes optrA and poxtA in hospital enterococci

Microbiologists from the Dublin Dental University Hospital Microbiology Unit at Trinity College in collaboration with colleagues at the National MRSA Reference Laboratory at St. James’s Hospital Dublin have found that Ireland has the highest prevalence of the multiple antibiotic resistance genes optrA and poxtA among linezolid-resistant isolates of the bacterial species Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis. Linezolid is an antibiotic used to treat infections by antibiotic-resistant Gram-positive bacteria. The researchers used whole-genome sequencing to identify optrA and poxtA in hospital isolates of E. faecium and E. faecalis and showed that these genes could be readily transferred to antibiotic susceptible isolates on large transferable genetic elements called plasmids. Application process now open for the National Dental Nurse Training Programme of Ireland 2020

This 16 month training programme offers an opportunity to those currently employed as trainee dental nurses to achieve a formal award. Successful completion of this programme, commencing September 2020, will lead to a Diploma in Dental Nursing (Trinity College Dublin) and will permit entry onto the Voluntary Dental Council Register for Dental Nurses in Ireland.
