New Irish study reveals frequent transmission of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among healthcare workers, patients and the environment in a large acute hospital under non-outbreak conditions using whole-genome sequencing
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have been endemic in Irish hospitals for several decades and remain a significant clinical issue. The introduction of various MRSA clones into Irish hospitals is poorly understood, with no universal MRSA patient admission screening. Routine screening of healthcare workers (HCWs) for MRSA is uncommon in most countries without a suspected epidemiological link between patient infections and HCWs. Environmental MRSA are not routinely investigated in hospitals.

Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Egan who graduated yesterday with her Ph.D. from TCD. Sarah undertook her Ph.D. research in the Microbiology Research Unit, Division of Oral Biosciences at the Dublin Dental University Hospital under the supervision of Prof. D. Coleman. Sarah’s Ph.D. research investigated the population biology of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) from Irish hospitals and the genetic basis of linezolid resistance among hospital enterococci using whole-genome sequencing.

New Irish study reveals how vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, a globally emerging hospital superbug, acquires and rapidly transfers resistance to antibiotics of last resort

Infections caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria are a leading threat to public health worldwide. The bacterium Enterococcus faecium has emerged globally as a significant cause of hospital-acquired infections because of its naturally low susceptibility to many commonly used antibiotics. Therapeutic options are limited to a small number of antibiotics including vancomycin. However, rising proportions of vancomycin-resistant E. faecium (VREfm) infections have been reported worldwide with limited treatment options. Data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control revealed that for over a decade, the Republic of Ireland has reported one of the highest rates of invasive VREfm infections in Europe, ranging between 32.5%-45.8% (2006-2019).

The Odontology Section of The Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland would like to thank all speakers and attendees of our first event of this academic year on Monday 15th November 2021 on The Dental Management of the Head & Neck Cancer Patient. Turn-out to this synchronous online event was excellent, with audience members attending from all across Ireland and attendance transcending traditional medical/dental barriers. The speakers broadly covered the dental journey of the head & neck cancer patient from initial presentation right through to interim and definitive rehabilitation. The lecture was recorded for asynchronous access. If attendees are interested in accessing the recording, please feel free to contact the Odontology Section.
