The biennial scientific conference of the International Society for Disability and Oral Health was held in Seoul, Korea in September bringing together a global community of clinicians, educators, academics and advocates from all areas of Health and Social Care. There was a large delegation from Ireland present and the Irish Society for Disability and Oral Health successfully won the bid to hold IADH2026 in two years time at Trinity College Dublin. Professor Alison Dougall was awarded honorary life membership of iADH in her absence and this will be bestowed at iADHDublin 2026.

The DDUH are delighted to announce they will be a collection point for the Hygiene Hub.

Congratulations to Liam Grealy who graduated from TCD with his Ph.D. on Friday the 14th of June 2024. Liam’s Ph.D. project investigated the role of the oro-nasal cavity as a microbial reservoir for foot ulcer infections in patients with type II diabetes and the application of electrochemically activated hypochlorous acid as a novel therapeutic agent for treating diabetic foot ulcer infections. Liam’s project was funded by the Health Research Board (project EIA2019-002) and worked under the supervision of Dr Brenda McManus and Professor David Coleman from the Dublin Dental University Hospital Microbiology Unit, Division of Oral Biosciences.

Congratulations to all of our auditors who conducted audits in the past year and presented their findings to colleagues at the DDUH Clinical Audit Presentation Evening on Thursday 30 May.

The Faculty of Health Sciences Annual Research Blitz was held on 16th May 2024. There were three presentation categories Research Assistants, Postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. Each category had an award for the best talk. We are delighted to announce that Ross Quigley won the best talk in the PhD category out of 21 entries.

Padhraig Fleming was presented with the BF and Helen E Dewel Award at the American Academy of Orthodontists Annual Session in New Orleans on 5th May. The Dewel Award recognises the best clinical research paper published in the American Journal of Orthodontics in the preceding calendar year and was awarded on the basis of a clinical trial involving the comparison of fixed and removable functional appliances. Padhraig is the first orthodontist globally to have been awarded this prize on three occasions.

Teddy bear hospital (TBH) is a programme run by Trinity’s paediatric society to familiarise children with healthcare settings, and to alleviate any fears they may have. TBH also aims to raise funds for BUMBLEance which is the children’s ambulance service of Ireland.

Delighted to share that our very own IRC Research Fellow Dr Isha Behl is featured in the Society for Optics and Photonics Women in Optics.
